Giant Sequoia Redwood
(Sequoiadendron giganteum)
Description
The Giant Sequoia is one of the most awe-inspiring trees in the world, famous for its enormous size, beautiful cinnamon-red bark, and incredible lifespan. Native to the Sierra Nevada mountains of California, these majestic evergreens can live for thousands of years and grow into living monuments for future generations. Young trees grow in a graceful pyramid shape with soft blue-green foliage that becomes more rugged and majestic with age.
Planting Instructions
- Choose a location with full sun and plenty of room to grow.
- Plant in well-drained soil. Avoid areas with standing water.
- Dig a hole 2–3 times wider than the root ball, but no deeper than the roots.
- Place the tree so the top of the root ball is level with the ground.
- Backfill gently with native soil and water deeply after planting.
- Apply 2–4 inches of mulch around the base, keeping mulch away from the trunk.
Watering
- Water deeply and regularly during the first 2–3 years.
- Keep soil consistently moist but not soggy.
- During hot weather, water thoroughly once or twice weekly.
- Mature trees tolerate short dry periods but prefer occasional deep watering.
Care & Maintenance
- Fertilizer is rarely needed in healthy soil.
- Minimal pruning required—remove only dead or damaged branches.
- Protect young trunks from lawn equipment and weed trimmers.
- Hardy, resilient, and relatively pest resistant once established.
Mature Size
- Height: 150–250+ feet (over many decades)
- Width: 20–40 feet
- Growth Rate: Moderate to fast when young
Fun Facts

- Some specimens are over 3,000 years old.
